Hodag Haze - Wisconsin-Brewed Beer Soap®
It emerged, according to the entirely credible and not-at-all-fabricated testimony of Rhinelander's own Eugene Shepard, from the primordial depths of the Wisconsin Northwoods in 1893 — a creature of fearsome aspect and considerable personal charisma. The Hodag, as Shepard described it with great enthusiasm and minimal regard for zoological accuracy, possessed the head of a frog, the grinning face of an elephant, the back of a dinosaur, and the tail of an alligator — all of it covered in jet black fur and adorned with formidable spines. It smelled, reportedly, of burning wood and sulfur. It was, almost certainly, an elaborate hoax perpetrated by a man who understood that a good story, once properly launched, is essentially unstoppable.
He was correct. The Hodag has never left Rhinelander. It never will.
Hodag Haze pays homage to this magnificent piece of Wisconsin mythology — and to the spirited, deeply self-aware community that has embraced its most famous fictional resident with exactly the kind of proud, unhurried confidence that defines the Wisconsin Northwoods character.
The fragrance is as gloriously untamed as the legend itself. It opens with a subtle, mysterious accord of wild berry, muscadine, and sun-warmed apricot — the forest floor in late summer, ripe and slightly feral. Then the heart erupts: heliotrope, jasmine, carnation, geranium, ylang ylang, rose, and black orchid arrive in a floral explosion of almost theatrical proportion, layered and complex and thoroughly unwilling to be ignored. The base settles into rich burnt cedar, dark patchouli, creamy sandalwood, and vanilla musk — deep, resinous, and permanent, like something ancient rooted in the Wisconsin bedrock.
It is, in a word, magnificent. Much like the creature that inspired it.
Brewed with a Wisconsin craft microbrew from Rhinelander itself — because if you are going to honor a legend, you honor it completely — because regional authenticity, in this workshop, is not merely an aesthetic choice. It is a standard.
And why beer in a bar of soap? The question is fair, and the answer is rather satisfying. Beer's natural sugars produce an exceptionally rich, creamy lather that plain water simply cannot replicate. Its B vitamins and antioxidants lend a subtle nourishing quality to the skin, while the yeast contributes to a smoother, more conditioning wash experience. The result is a bar that performs as distinctively as it smells — which, in the tradition of Wisconsin Waterfalls Soap & Etc., is the only acceptable outcome.
